Cate Blanchett’s Eco-Conscious High Jewelry at the BAFTA

Cate Blanchett stole the show at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards last week in London with her eco-conscious high jewelry. The actress amazed the audience with a deadstock outfit, wearing a custom Louis Vuitton choker elegantly draped around her claret dress, sending a powerful message of sustainability.

Ms. Blanchett, a long-time environmental activist, declared in 2020 that she would exclusively wear previously worn outfits on the red carpet. The 2024 BAFTAs were no exception, as Cate donned a long burgundy gown crafted from deadstock jersey fabrics sourced from Louis Vuitton’s archive. Similarly, her necklace was a repurposed design from her previous year’s look.

The exquisite cross-body choker chain consists of various pearl shades, along with a diamond chain adorned with the iconic Louis Vuitton monogram. It features three remarkable gemstones arranged vertically: a stunning 15.25-carat pink spinel with a cushion cut, nestled within a double diamond-studded monogram; a captivating 10.73-carat tsavorite garnet with a cushion cut; and finally, a graceful 2.70-carat oval purple sapphire lovingly embraced by diamonds. The result is a supremely graceful interpretation of an eco-warrior’s protective gear.

To complete her ensemble, she wore a pair of simple dark stud earrings also from the previous year. Ms. Blanchett captivated our attention with her striking look while raising awareness about sustainability and the issue of overconsumption in the fashion industry.

“I love the new and the next, but I also appreciate the opportunity to rework, reflect, and bring the best of the past into the present,” said Cate. “There are no single fixes to address anthropogenic climate change, but it is imperative to find creative ways to tackle excess in the fashion industry and the pressures it imposes on our climate.
